ASSESSING

Principal Residence Exemption (PRE)

A Principal Residence Exemption (PRE) exempts a residence from the tax levied by a local school district for school operating purposes, up to 18 mills.

To claim a PRE, the property owner must submit a Principal Residence Exemption Affidavit. A valid affidavit filed on or before June 1 allows an owner to receive a PRE on the current year summer and winter tax levy and subsequent tax levies so long as it remains the owner’s principal residence. A valid affidavit filed after June 1 and on or before November 1 allows an owner to receive a PRE on the current winter tax levy and subsequent tax levies so long as it remains the owner’s principal residence.

Assessing Notice to Residents Regarding Updating Property Records:

Cooper Township is required by the State of Michigan to review 20% of the Township properties every year.  This includes taking photos and measurements of structures on those properties. When visiting properties, the Township employees will wear ID badges. This year those streets being reviewed are, Arctic, Baseline, Beverly, Boylan, Bracket, C Ave, Canton, Chandra, DE Ave, Douglas, E Ave, Everhard, F Ave, Elk Antler, Old Douglas, and Remus. There will also be periodic inspections of any construction and building permits. Feel free to call Mindy Drewyor (269-585-6978) with any questions.
